The Pottuvil Lagoon Tour by Raft is a guided, non-motorised paddle safari across one of the quieter water bodies on Sri Lanka's eastern coast. The lagoon sits just four kilometres north of Arugam Bay, in the town of Pottuvil in Ampara District, and it draws a different kind of attention than the surf breaks to the south — calm, unhurried, and shaped by the mangrove forests that line its banks.
You travel in a low-slung, eco-friendly raft or paddle craft, guided by an experienced boatman and tracker who reads the water and the treeline as you move. The craft is human-powered throughout, which keeps the noise down and the wildlife close. Crocodiles bask on the banks, water monitors slip between the roots, and various aquatic and semi-aquatic bird species work the shallows. Macaque monkeys are a common presence in the mangroves above. Elephants occasionally come to the water's edge, particularly in the evenings, though any sighting depends on where the animals happen to be on the day — it is never something that can be promised.
The tour runs on two daily sessions: an early morning departure and a late afternoon one at 4:00 pm. Both have their own character — the early hours offer stillness and low light, while the evening brings the landscape into a different kind of colour as dusk approaches. Each session lasts approximately two hours, beginning and ending at the lagoon entrance.
Included in the tour is the raft with your experienced boatman and tracker, bottled water, and all applicable taxes and service charges. Hotel pick-up and drop-off are not part of the package, though guests staying at nearby properties may wish to confirm local arrangements directly. Food, drinks beyond the provided water, and gratuities are also outside the tour price. Life jackets are provided on board, as visible in the photographs.
