Lahugala Kitulana National Park is one of the smallest and least visited parks in Sri Lanka, a short way inland from Arugam Bay in the south-east of the island. This listing is the entrance ticket to the park, booked in advance for your party so you have it in hand at the gate.
The park was first declared a wildlife sanctuary in 1966 and became a national park in 1980. It is managed by the Department of Wildlife Conservation, and its ground is largely flat, broken by rocky outcrops and held together by the reservoirs of Lahugala, Kitulana and Sengamuwa. The grassland around the Lahugala tank draws elephants in numbers, and the park is an important habitat for the Sri Lankan elephant.
Beyond the elephants, visitors may see sloth bears, axis deer, toque macaques, wetland birds such as painted storks and kingfishers, amphibians, reptiles and freshwater turtles. Endemic birds recorded here include the red-faced malkoha and the Sri Lanka spurfowl. Its small size and few visitors make it a quiet choice for patient wildlife watching and photography.
The ticket is a pass through the park gates only. A safari jeep and a naturalist are arranged separately, and Lakpura can book both for you. Hotel pick-up and drop-off, food and drinks, gratuities and personal expenses are not included.
