Trinco Blu by Cinnamon is an 81-room beachfront resort on Uppuveli Beach, just north of Trincomalee, run by Cinnamon Hotels & Resorts on Sri Lanka's east coast. Its white, arcaded wings look across lawns and a long swimming pool to the sea, and the hotel is a base for the bay's boat trips, snorkelling and dolphin and whale watching as much as for days on the sand at Uppuveli Beach.
Every category has an ocean view, and every room has air conditioning, Wi-Fi, a television, a minibar, a coffee maker, an in-room safe, a hairdryer and room service, and every category sleeps two or three adults. There are four categories:
Captain's Deck is the main restaurant, serving buffets at breakfast, lunch and dinner, with tables indoors or outside overlooking the ocean. The Crab, by the beach, is the seafood restaurant, known for fresh crab and other coastal dishes, and Rum Hold is the bar, with cocktails, premium spirits and light bites. The hotel also arranges a barbecue dinner on the beach with grilled seafood and meats, oceanfront seafood dinners overlooking the bay, and Sri Lankan meals cooked with traditional techniques and local ingredients.
There is an outdoor swimming pool in the gardens, overlooked by the suites. The Svastha Serene Spa offers massages, facials, herbal body therapies and aromatherapy, drawing on Balinese healing traditions. Most of the activity is on the water: Cinnamon Nature Trails, the group's naturalist team, runs marine mammal safaris to see dolphins and, in season, blue whales; snorkelling trips to Pigeon Island; scuba diving for certified divers; and a boat trip around the bay. Jet skiing, banana-boat rides, kayaking and surfing can be arranged from the beach. For celebrations, the beach and gardens are used for weddings, and The Lighthouse is the hotel's event space with ocean views.
Pigeon Island National Park, a small marine park with shallow coral reefs, is about a 20-minute boat ride from the hotel. Further north along the coast are Nilaveli Beach, a 4-kilometre stretch of sand, and the clear water of Marble Beach. To the south lies Trincomalee itself, with the colonial-era Fort Frederick and the Hindu Koneswaram Temple on Swami Rock, high above the sea. The hotel's boat trip takes in both, along with a stop at the fishing village's market.
Yes. Trincomalee railway station is the end of the line from Colombo, and the hotel is a short drive north of it. Arrange a pick-up with the hotel or with us in advance.
The hotel is about 217 kilometres in a straight line from Bandaranaike International Airport, right across the island on the north-east coast. The simplest way to arrive is a private transfer from Colombo airport to Trinco Blu by Cinnamon, which takes you all the way to the door. Many travellers break the journey in the Cultural Triangle, where the sister hotels Cinnamon Lodge and Habarana Village by Cinnamon lie on the way.
It suits couples, families and friends who want a full-service resort directly on the beach, with the sea as the main entertainment: swimming, snorkelling, diving and boat trips. Three or four nights gives time for Pigeon Island, a whale or dolphin trip and a day around Trincomalee.
