About this experience
Toddy, or Ra, is the naturally fermented sap of coconut and palmyra palms, and on Sri Lanka's west coast it is tapped much as it always has been. This tour takes you out of Negombo and into a working coconut grove, where tappers climb the palms, cut the flower spathe and collect the sap that becomes one of the island's oldest drinks. It is a short, close-up look at a coastal craft that most visitors only hear about.
You start with a welcome drink and an introduction to toddy tapping, its history and its place in local life, with a brochure covering the process. Transport then takes you to the coconut grove, where you watch tappers scale the trunks and work high in the crowns, harvesting sap with the precision the job demands. A tasting follows, pouring both freshly tapped and aged toddy so you can compare the mildly sweet early sap with the sharper fermented version. Pol roti with spicy sambol is served alongside, the pairing local drinkers favour. Your guide answers questions throughout, and a group photo closes the visit.
Booking is confirmed instantly, for two to eight guests. The price covers your guided visit, grove admission, the tasting with refreshments and return transport to the coconut grove from the designated pickup point, with drinking water provided. Cancel more than 24 hours ahead for a full refund; inside that window no refund applies.
