The Royal edition of Akbar Earl Grey Gold uses big, whole orthodox leaf from high-grown Ceylon gardens rather than a smaller broken grade. The leaves are left uncrushed and then flavoured with natural bergamot oil.
Large leaf infuses more slowly than broken grades, so the cup is smooth and malty rather than sharp, with a clear citrus aroma, soft floral notes and an amber colour.
Milk or a slice of lemon both suit it. For a summer drink, brew it a little stronger and pour it over ice. The gold carton holds 80 g of loose leaf. Close the carton after use and keep it in a dry cupboard away from spices and coffee, which the leaf picks up easily.
