Question 1

What is Pandanus ceylanicus?

Accepted Answer

Pandanus ceylanicus is a screwpine species in the family Pandanaceae, native to or closely associated with Sri Lanka. It is a shrub or small tree with long, spirally arranged, spine-edged leaves and characteristic prop roots. It is catalogued among Sri Lanka's Ayurvedic medicinal plants.

Question 2

Where does Pandanus ceylanicus grow?

Accepted Answer

The species is found in lowland, humid environments in Sri Lanka, including coastal margins, riverbanks, and waterlogged areas. It tolerates sandy and saline-influenced soils, making it well-suited to transitional coastal ecosystems in the island's wet zone.

Question 3

What are the medicinal uses of Pandanus ceylanicus in Ayurveda?

Accepted Answer

In Sri Lanka's Ayurvedic tradition, screwpine roots are associated with diuretic and cooling properties, while leaves have been used for their astringent characteristics. The plant's aromatic compounds are also of interest in herbal cosmetics. Traditional uses should not substitute professional medical advice.

Question 4

Is Pandanus ceylanicus endemic to Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The species is closely associated with Sri Lanka and forms part of the island's documented endemic or near-endemic flora. Sri Lanka is a recognised biodiversity hotspot, and many of its plant species, including several screwpines, are found nowhere else in the world.

Question 5

What is the difference between Pandanus ceylanicus and pandan used in cooking?

Accepted Answer

The pandan widely used in South and Southeast Asian cooking is Pandanus amaryllifolius, a different species cultivated primarily for its aromatic leaves. Pandanus ceylanicus is a distinct species valued in Ayurvedic medicine rather than as a culinary herb, though both belong to the same genus.

Question 6

What does a screwpine plant look like?

Accepted Answer

Screwpines have long, stiff, strap-like leaves arranged in a tight spiral around the stem, which gives the genus its common name. The plants also develop prop roots — aerial roots that arch from the trunk or branches down into the ground to provide structural support.

Question 7

Are Pandanus plants important for coastal conservation in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Screwpines help stabilise loose and waterlogged soils along coastlines and riverbanks, reducing erosion. Their dense growth also provides habitat for wildlife. Native coastal vegetation including screwpines has been highlighted in post-tsunami and coastal restoration programmes in Sri Lanka.
