Question 1

What is Eleusine indica used for in traditional medicine?

Accepted Answer

In Sri Lankan and South Asian Ayurvedic traditions, Eleusine indica is used primarily as a cooling and detoxifying herb. It is prepared as a decoction for fever management and urinary complaints, and as a topical paste for minor wounds and skin inflammation. It typically appears as part of compound herbal formulations rather than as a standalone remedy.

Question 2

Is Eleusine indica the same as goosegrass?

Accepted Answer

Yes, Eleusine indica is commonly known as goosegrass or Indian goosegrass. It is a low-growing annual grass in the family Poaceae, recognised by its finger-like arrangement of seed spikes. While often treated as a common weed in many parts of the world, it has documented medicinal uses in Ayurvedic and traditional folk medicine systems across South and Southeast Asia.

Question 3

Where does Eleusine indica grow in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Eleusine indica grows throughout Sri Lanka, from coastal lowlands to mid-elevation agricultural zones. It thrives in open, disturbed soils — along roadsides, on paddy field margins, in home gardens, and in dry scrubland. It is one of the most adaptable and widely distributed plants on the island.

Question 4

What is the Sinhala name for Eleusine indica?

Accepted Answer

Eleusine indica is known in Sinhala as Manel Kudu or Embakiriya. These names reflect its local identity within Sri Lanka's ethnobotanical tradition, where it is recognised by practitioners of traditional medicine even in its most common roadside form.

Question 5

Does Eleusine indica have proven health benefits?

Accepted Answer

Laboratory studies have identified bioactive compounds in Eleusine indica, including flavonoids and polyphenols with antioxidant and antimicrobial properties. Some animal model studies suggest anti-inflammatory effects. However, rigorous clinical trials in humans are still limited, so its benefits remain within the domain of traditional use and preliminary scientific investigation rather than established clinical medicine.

Question 6

How is Eleusine indica prepared for Ayurvedic use?

Accepted Answer

The most common preparation is a decoction, where the whole plant — roots, leaves, and stems — is boiled in water, strained, and taken orally. For topical applications, fresh plant material is crushed into a paste. The plant may also be dried and incorporated into compound powders or herbal formulas used in traditional Ayurvedic practice.

Question 7

Is Eleusine indica listed in official Sri Lankan Ayurvedic records?

Accepted Answer

Yes, Eleusine indica is part of the official catalogue of Ayurvedic medicinal plants maintained in Sri Lanka. The country's Department of Ayurveda documents such plants as part of a broader effort to preserve and research the island's traditional medical knowledge. Its inclusion reflects consistent recognition across regional ethnobotanical records and practitioner traditions.
