Question 1

What is Cymbopogon winterianus used for?

Accepted Answer

Cymbopogon winterianus is cultivated primarily for its essential oil, which is used in insect repellents, perfumery, cosmetics, and aromatherapy. In Ayurvedic medicine it is applied externally to relieve headaches, joint pain, and minor skin conditions. It is not typically used as a food ingredient.

Question 2

What is the difference between Cymbopogon winterianus and lemongrass?

Accepted Answer

Both belong to the same genus, but Cymbopogon winterianus (Java citronella) produces an oil rich in citronellal, citronellol, and geraniol, giving it a rosy-citrus scent. Cymbopogon citratus (lemongrass) has a sharper lemon character and is the species commonly used in cooking. Java citronella is grown mainly for its industrial oil rather than culinary use.

Question 3

Is citronella oil from Sri Lanka good quality?

Accepted Answer

Sri Lanka has a long-established tradition of producing Java citronella oil, and locally distilled oils are exported to fragrance and cosmetics markets globally. Quality depends on the citronellal content and distillation method. Oil processed by the Industrial Technology Institute or certified smallholder cooperatives typically meets international specification grades.

Question 4

Can I grow Cymbopogon winterianus in my garden?

Accepted Answer

Yes, the plant is relatively easy to grow in tropical and subtropical climates with good drainage and full sun. It propagates from root divisions rather than seed and needs to be cut back regularly to maintain oil yield and prevent the clump from becoming too dense. It is not frost-tolerant.

Question 5

Does citronella really repel mosquitoes?

Accepted Answer

Citronella oil has demonstrated short-term mosquito-repellent activity in scientific studies, though its effectiveness is notably shorter-lasting than synthetic repellents such as DEET. It works best in relatively enclosed spaces or when reapplied frequently. Burning citronella candles or placing crushed leaves around a seating area can reduce — but not eliminate — mosquito presence.

Question 6

Where can I buy Cymbopogon winterianus products in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Essential oil distilled from Java citronella is sold by spice and herbal shops in Colombo, Kandy, and Galle, as well as through online platforms. Lakpura offers dried and powdered Cymbopogon-genus products that can be shipped internationally. Always check the botanical name on the label to confirm you are buying the Java citronella species rather than a blended product.

Question 7

Is Cymbopogon winterianus safe to use on skin?

Accepted Answer

The essential oil should always be diluted in a carrier oil before applying to skin, as undiluted citronella oil can cause irritation or sensitisation in some individuals. A dilution of around 2–3% in a base such as coconut oil is standard for topical use. People with known grass-family allergies or sensitive skin should patch-test before wider application.
