Damro Labookellie Estate

Perched at around 1,500 metres above sea level in the mist-wrapped hills of Nuwara Eliya, Damro Labookellie Estate is one of the most visitor-friendly working tea estates in Sri Lanka. Part of the Damro Tea group, it combines genuine agricultural heritage with an accessible, well-organised experience for travellers who want to understand where Ceylon Tea actually comes from — not just buy a tin of it at an airport.

What is Damro Labookellie Estate?

Labookellie is a high-grown estate, meaning its teas develop a distinctive brightness and brisk character shaped by cool temperatures, high humidity, and the slow growth that altitude enforces. The estate has been producing tea for well over a century, and the main factory building still carries the architectural character of the colonial plantation era. Today it operates as a fully functional tea factory that welcomes visitors while the production lines run — making a visit feel like a genuine window into industry, not a theme-park re-enactment.

What can you see and do at Labookellie?

A guided factory tour takes you through the five core stages of orthodox black tea manufacture: withering, rolling, fermentation (oxidation), drying, and sorting. Each stage is explained by estate staff who work alongside the machinery daily, so questions get real answers rather than rehearsed scripts. The rolling machines and drying cylinders in particular give a clear sense of the physical demands of tea production at scale.

After the factory floor, visitors move to the estate's tea centre and café, which overlooks the terraced bushes. Here you can taste several grades of Labookellie tea — typically brewed plain and without sugar so the character of each variety comes through clearly. The café also serves light snacks and is a comfortable place to sit for half an hour as the mist moves across the surrounding hills.

The grounds themselves are worth a slow walk. The geometry of the plucking rows against the ridgeline is one of those sights that photographs cannot quite reproduce — the scale and gradient only register when you are standing in it. Early morning visits are particularly rewarding because the light is softer and the mist has not yet burned off.

If you are interested in comparing estate styles, Bluefield Tea Gardens is another Nuwara Eliya estate that offers a somewhat different visitor experience and is worth including on the same day if time allows.

What grades of tea does Labookellie produce?

Labookellie's factory processes several orthodox grades. The most commonly available to visitors include:

  • OP (Orange Pekoe) — long, wiry leaves that produce a golden, medium-bodied cup.
  • BOP (Broken Orange Pekoe) — smaller particles that brew faster and stronger.
  • BOPF (Broken Orange Pekoe Fannings) — fine grade often used in tea bags, brews quickly and with good colour.
  • Green tea — a smaller part of the output, processed without oxidation, producing a lighter, more delicate cup.

The estate shop sells packaged teas at reasonable prices, and buying directly from the factory guarantees freshness. Vacuum-sealed packets travel well and make straightforward gifts.

How do I get to Damro Labookellie Estate from Nuwara Eliya?

The estate sits along the Kandy–Nuwara Eliya road (A5), roughly 8 kilometres from Nuwara Eliya town in the direction of Kandy. The drive takes around 15 to 20 minutes depending on traffic. Most travellers arrive by private car or tuk-tuk; the route is well signposted and the estate entrance is visible from the main road.

For travellers arriving by train, the nearest station is Nanu Oya, which serves the Nuwara Eliya hill-country route. From there, a taxi or tuk-tuk to the estate takes about 20 to 25 minutes. If you are combining the visit with Horton Plains National Park, note that the park entrance is also reachable from the same A5 corridor, making it practical to do both in a single day with an early start.

When is the best time to visit Labookellie Estate?

The estate is open year-round, and the factory operates on most days during regular working hours. The main plucking season, when you are most likely to see pickers working the rows, typically runs from January to March and again from August to September — the dry inter-monsoon periods. Visiting during these windows gives the fullest picture of how the estate functions.

Nuwara Eliya's climate is cool throughout the year, so layered clothing is advisable regardless of season. The South-West monsoon (roughly May to July) brings heavier rainfall to the region, which can reduce visibility but also intensifies the greenness of the landscape considerably.

How does high-grown Ceylon tea differ from mid- and low-grown varieties?

Sri Lanka's tea-growing regions are classified by altitude: low-grown below approximately 600 metres, mid-grown between 600 and 1,200 metres, and high-grown above 1,200 metres. Labookellie, at around 1,500 metres, sits firmly in the high-grown category. At this elevation, cooler temperatures slow the development of the tea leaf, allowing more complex aromatic compounds to accumulate. The resulting teas are typically lighter in colour, higher in brightness, and notably more fragrant than their low-grown counterparts, which tend to be fuller-bodied and darker.

This distinction matters when tasting at the estate. If you have previously only tried commercially blended teas, a single-origin high-grown cup from Labookellie can be a genuine revelation in terms of clarity and finish.

Is Damro Labookellie Estate suitable for children?

Yes, the estate is generally family-friendly. The factory tour involves walking on industrial flooring around operating machinery, so children should be supervised and sensible footwear is advisable. The café and garden areas are relaxed and easy to navigate. The combination of the open landscape, the tea bushes to walk through, and the novelty of watching machinery in action tends to hold children's interest reasonably well — though the tour itself runs to perhaps 30 to 45 minutes, which is a practical upper limit for younger visitors.
