Question 2

Where does Cassia surattensis grow in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The species is widely distributed across Sri Lanka from sea level to around 1,000 metres elevation. It is common along roadsides, in home gardens, and at forest margins in both the dry and wet zones. It is also cultivated as an ornamental and shade tree in urban areas.

Question 3

What does Cassia surattensis ssp. glauca look like?

Accepted Answer

It is a small to medium-sized tree with pinnate leaves that have a distinctive blue-green, waxy surface. It produces bright yellow flowers in loose clusters throughout much of the year, followed by long, flattened brown seed pods. It typically grows to between 3 and 8 metres tall.

Question 4

Is Cassia surattensis the same as Senna?

Accepted Answer

Cassia surattensis belongs to the broader legume family and is related to species now classified under the genus Senna, such as Senna tora and Senna alata. However, Cassia surattensis retains its classification under the World Flora Online taxonomy and is treated as distinct from reclassified Senna species.

Question 5

What is the Sinhala name for Cassia surattensis?

Accepted Answer

It is commonly referred to as Wairi Araliya in Sinhala, though vernacular names can vary by region and local tradition. In English horticultural contexts it is sometimes called the Scrambled Egg Tree, a name shared with related yellow-flowering relatives.

Question 6

What is the Lakpura catalogue reference for this plant?

Accepted Answer

Cassia surattensis ssp. glauca is registered in the Lakpura botanical catalogue under the reference code LK94006414. This is part of a systematic effort to document Sri Lanka's Ayurvedic and ethnobotanical plant heritage with standardised identifiers.

Question 7

Does Cassia surattensis have any ecological benefits?

Accepted Answer

Yes. As a legume, it fixes atmospheric nitrogen, enriching the soil around it. Its yellow flowers attract bees and butterflies, supporting local pollinator populations. The canopy also provides shade and shelter for understory wildlife, making it a useful species in agroforestry and habitat restoration contexts.
