Question 1

What is Cassia kleinii used for in traditional medicine?

Accepted Answer

Cassia kleinii is documented among Sri Lanka's ayurvedic medicinal plants. Like other members of the Cassia genus, it is associated with therapeutic applications relating to digestion and skin health. Its use is best guided by a qualified ayurvedic practitioner familiar with classical Sri Lankan texts.

Question 2

Is Cassia kleinii native to Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Cassia kleinii is recorded as part of Sri Lanka's indigenous or naturalised flora and is catalogued within the official inventory of the country's ayurvedic medicinal plants. Its range extends through parts of South Asia, and it grows in scrubland and forest-margin habitats on the island.

Question 3

What is the difference between Cassia kleinii and Cassia tora?

Accepted Answer

Both belong to the broader Cassia/Senna grouping within the legume family, but they are distinct species with different morphologies and documented uses. Cassia tora is more widely cultivated and studied globally for its seeds, which are used in herbal teas and health supplements. Cassia kleinii is a lesser-studied species particularly noted in Sri Lanka's ayurvedic pharmacopoeia.

Question 4

Where can I learn about Sri Lanka's medicinal plants?

Accepted Answer

The Institute of Indigenous Medicine in Colombo and government-affiliated ayurvedic hospitals maintain research programmes and sometimes plant collections open to visitors. Herbal gardens attached to ayurvedic resorts in the Kandy and Matale regions also offer guided introductions to the island's medicinal flora.

Question 5

How is Cassia kleinii identified in the field?

Accepted Answer

Like most Cassia species, Cassia kleinii is a shrub producing characteristic bright yellow flowers and elongated seed pods typical of the Caesalpinioideae subfamily. Precise identification at species level requires botanical expertise, as several Cassia and Senna species grow in Sri Lanka and share similar features.

Question 6

Are Cassia plants related to cinnamon?

Accepted Answer

The name 'cassia' is sometimes used informally to refer to a type of cinnamon bark from Cinnamomum cassia, which is a different plant family altogether. The Cassia genus discussed here belongs to the legume family Fabaceae and is not botanically related to the cinnamon tree, despite the shared common name.

Question 7

Is Cassia kleinii available as a herbal product?

Accepted Answer

Cassia kleinii itself is not widely available as a commercial herbal product. Related Cassia and Senna species — such as Cassia tora and Senna alata — are more commonly found in herbal tea and supplement form. Products derived from these relatives are available from Sri Lankan herbal producers.
