Yala Village, Yala, Sri Lanka
Yala Village is a charming all-chalet game lodge situated on the edge of Yala National Park, close to the small coastal village of Kirinda. Designed as a sanctuary where guests can escape into the surrounding wilderness, the property runs its activities in harmony with nature, offering both jungle and beach chalets adorned with modern amenities.
Roughly 280 km from Colombo, Kirinda sits on the border of Yala National Park and is reached via the Colombo–Galle–Matara highway through Tissamaharama. From the Kirinda/Yala junction, a left turn leads approximately 13 km further to the hotel. An alternative approach is available via the Ratnapura–Embilipitiya road passing through Uda Walawe.
Accommodation
The hotel houses 54 jungle chalets and 6 beach chalets, each furnished to reflect the rustic character of the surrounding environment. Wall hangings, curtains, furniture, bed linen and even light fittings carry jungle motifs. Beach chalets open onto private verandas with views of the Indian Ocean, while jungle chalets face inward towards the forest, where wildlife frequently wanders through the hotel grounds. All chalets include air-conditioning, telephone with IDD, cable television, tea and coffee making facilities, a minibar, hairdryer, balcony, complimentary toiletries, hot and cold water, and a shower cubicle.
Dining and Facilities
The main restaurant serves a variety of Eastern and Western dishes, and the Village Bar offers local and international beverages, snacks and fresh fruit juices. The Observation Deck Bar, located on the top floor, provides both drinks and open views of the surroundings. For smaller parties of between 6 and 25 guests, the hotel can arrange bush dinners in the wilderness.
A large outdoor swimming pool overlooks the lake, offering views of the diverse wildlife that gathers nearby. A meeting room accommodates up to 50 guests, and a souvenir shop sells gifts and jewellery. Additional services include room service, Wi-Fi in the main building and pool side, a doctor on call, laundry, safety deposit boxes, left luggage facilities and foreign exchange services.
Wildlife and Excursions
Yala Village organises excursions to Yala National Park as well as other significant sites in the region. In-house naturalists are available to share their knowledge and recommend experiences suited to each guest. The area is renowned for a diverse range of wildlife including Asian elephants, leopards, sloth bears, spotted deer, wild boar and a wide variety of birds.
Popular activities include jeep safaris into the park, exploring the rock temple at Sithulpauwe, practising traditional fishing techniques known as Maadala at Palatupana, visiting the sacred city of Kataragama, and touring Kumana and Bundala Parks as well as Debara Wewa.
