Amila De Alwis sets out to write something closer to a user's manual than a self-help book: an account of how the human brain actually works, put in terms a general reader can follow. The governing idea is that the mind operates rather like an operating system — shaped by evolution, by genetics, and by repeated neural pathways that harden into habits and subconscious beliefs.
The book is arranged in three sections:
- Know
- Change
- Use
Across them, the text moves from explaining the machinery to working with it. De Alwis sets out practical tools — mindfulness, meditation and visualisation among them — directed at reprogramming the autopilot instincts that run much of ordinary behaviour. The method he returns to is thinking about thinking: observing one's own mental processes rather than simply being carried along by them.
The aim he describes is what he calls a Wise Mind, a state in which emotion and logic are held in balance rather than one overriding the other. He applies this to the places it tends to matter most in daily life — relationships, mental health, and the ability to get things done.
Written in English and published in Colombo by M. D. Gunasena & Co., an established Sri Lankan house publishing in both Sinhala and English. It will suit readers who want an accessible explanation of how the mind functions alongside concrete practices to work on it, rather than theory on its own.
