This is the Sinhala text of the second part of Nikolai Ostrovsky's Soviet novel, known in English as How the Steel Was Tempered. The whole work appeared in two parts, and this volume carries the later one. Readers who do not read Sinhala script should note that the entire book is in Sinhala; there is no English text in it.

Ostrovsky's novel is semi-autobiographical. Its central figure, Pavel Korchagin, takes part in the Russian Revolution and in the civil war that followed, and the book follows the physical and emotional hardship he endures through those years. The author drew the material closely from his own life, and the novel became one of the defining works of early Soviet fiction.

The Sinhala translation is by Dedigama V. Rodrigo, a translator long associated with bringing Russian and Soviet literature into Sinhala. The work has been published in Sinhala before under other imprints; this edition is issued by M. D. Gunasena & Co. with the official permission of the Russian embassy.

It will interest readers of Sinhala translated fiction, students of Soviet and Russian literature, and anyone who first met Korchagin's story in an earlier Sinhala printing and wants the second part to complete the set.
