A children's story by Sybil Wettasinghe, the Sri Lankan artist and writer of children's books, published here in Tamil. The work first appeared in Sinhala as Malu Petawa; this is the Tamil translation, issued by M. D. Gunasena & Co. of Colombo.
Buyers outside Sri Lanka should note that the entire text is in Tamil. There is no English in the book, and no parallel Sinhala text — it is intended for Tamil-reading children and for adults reading aloud to them. Households raising children in Tamil abroad, and teachers running Tamil-language reading at home or in community classes, are the readers it suits.
Wettasinghe wrote and illustrated her own stories, and her books have long been part of what Sri Lankan children grow up reading in Sinhala. Translations such as this one carry the same stories across to Tamil readers.
