This is a Sinhala version of Rudyard Kipling's Puck of Pook's Hill, prepared by Maya Senarath and published in Colombo by M. D. Gunasena. The text throughout is Sinhala, so a reader without the language will not be able to follow it.

Kipling's original is a set of linked stories in which history and invention are mixed together. A brother and sister living in the countryside encounter a strange magical creature, and through its powers people who lived in earlier ages are brought into the children's present. Norman nobles, Roman soldiers and craftsmen of the past appear and speak from their own experience, and in this way the history and cultural inheritance of Britain is set before young readers as something living rather than something recited.

The appeal of the arrangement is that the past arrives in person. Rather than an account of eras in sequence, the reader meets individuals who belonged to them, each with a story of his own to tell the two children. It was written for young readers, and this Sinhala rendering carries it to Sinhala-reading children and to adults who want the stories in their own language.

M. D. Gunasena is a long-established Colombo publishing and bookselling house with a substantial list of Sinhala titles, including books for young readers and Sinhala versions of works first written in other languages. This edition sits in that part of the list, and will interest families building a Sinhala library for children, teachers looking for story material in Sinhala, and readers abroad who want their children reading in the language at home.
