A story in Sinhala from Sybil Wettasinghe, the Sri Lankan writer and illustrator whose children's books have been read in Sinhala households for generations.
The tale begins with a cloth patterned with flowers, received as a gift. It is washed and hung out in the sun, the wind catches it, and it is carried off and comes down in the garden of another house. What follows is a chain of events set off by that small accident.
The text is entirely in Sinhala, with no English translation, so it will suit readers of Sinhala and families raising children in the language abroad. Wettasinghe's storytelling sits in the everyday — a household object, a gust of wind, neighbours — and that ordinariness is much of its appeal.
