A picture storybook for young readers, written entirely in Sinhala. There is no English text, so this one is for a child who reads Sinhala or for an adult who can read it aloud to them.
It belongs to the newest series of children's stories by Sybil Wettasinghe, the Sri Lankan author and illustrator whose work has been part of Sinhala childhood reading for generations. The book is short, set in large type, and carried throughout by colour illustrations — the format the publisher intends for children in the primary grades, where the words on a page are few and the pictures do much of the telling.
That combination makes it useful well beyond a first reading. Sri Lankan families abroad often look for Sinhala books at exactly this level: simple enough for a child who is still gaining confidence with the script, and visually appealing enough that the child comes back to it. Wettasinghe's drawings, with their rounded figures and warm colour, are a large part of why her books hold a young reader's attention.
