A portrait of Kumaratunga Munidasa, the Sinhala scholar and language reformer, written by someone who knew him personally. Arisen Ahubudu spent time in Kumaratunga's company, and what he sets down here is drawn from that acquaintance: the man himself, his character and his learning, rather than a survey of his published work.
That distinction matters. A good deal has been written about Kumaratunga's literary contribution, but accounts dealing at length with the person are far less common. This book was written to fill that gap, and it was first issued some years ago by the same publisher before being brought back into print to mark a commemoration of Kumaratunga.
The text is entirely in Sinhala. There is no English edition or parallel translation, so readers will need to be comfortable reading Sinhala prose to use it.
It will be of most use to anyone following the life of Kumaratunga Munidasa and the circle around him — students of modern Sinhala letters, readers of the Hela movement, and those who want a first-hand impression of his scholarship rather than a secondary assessment of it. Arisen Ahubudu was himself a figure in Sinhala letters, and the account carries the weight of direct recollection.
