This is an abridged Sinhala retelling of Jules Verne's adventure novel Around the World in Eighty Days, prepared by Premasiri Mahingoda and issued by M. D. Gunasena & Co. of Colombo, a publishing house of long standing that produces books in Sinhala and English.
Verne wrote the original in French. The story follows Phileas Fogg, a Londoner, and his French manservant Passepartout, who set out to circle the globe after Fogg stakes a wager that the journey can be completed within the term named in the title. Whether the pair win the bet is the question the book carries to its close.
Because this is an abridgement rather than a full translation, it moves at the pace of the adventure itself, and the treatment suits readers coming to Verne in Sinhala for the first time, including younger readers reading independently.
Please note that the text is entirely in Sinhala. There is no English text in this edition. Buyers outside Sri Lanka should order it only if they read Sinhala, or are buying for someone who does — families abroad keeping up a child's reading in the language, Sinhala learners wanting a familiar story in a new script, and collectors of translated world fiction in Sri Lankan editions.
