Leo Tolstoy's novel in Sinhala, prepared by Munidasa Senarath Yapa and published in Colombo by M. D. Gunasena & Co. The whole text is in Sinhala — there is no English in it — so this edition is for readers who are comfortable reading the language, or who are building a Sinhala library at home or abroad.

Tolstoy wrote the book in the era when the Tsars ruled Russia, and the world he set it in is largely that of the wealthy classes and the court. Most of the figures who move through the story belong to that stratum, and the social arrangements, obligations and manners of the period are part of the substance of the novel rather than a backdrop to it. Alongside the story itself, the book gives a reader a considerable amount of material on Russian society of that time, which is part of why it continues to be read by people studying the period as well as by readers coming to it as fiction.

Sinhala renderings of the major Russian novelists have long had a readership in Sri Lanka, and this edition carries one of the best known of them into the language. It suits the general reader, the student of literature, and anyone assembling a shelf of world fiction in Sinhala.
