A title in the Dangakara Nuto series of Sinhala children's books, this one following Nuto through the sort of trouble that curious children get themselves into. The questions that rise in an inquisitive child's mind are taken seriously here and answered with a scientific eye, but in plain, lively language pitched at young readers rather than at their parents.
The book is illustrated throughout, with pictures accompanying the text as the story moves along. The combination — a story with a scientific question at its centre, carried by drawings — is what the series does, and this volume belongs to that pattern.
Nuwan Thotawaththa is a doctor by profession and a well-known writer for children. He has written many children's books and also writes lyrics for children's songs. His work has been nominated for awards.
Please note that the text is entirely in Sinhala. There is no English translation within the book, so it suits households where a child is reading or being read to in Sinhala — families abroad keeping up a child's first language, Sinhala-medium classrooms, and readers building a shelf of contemporary Sri Lankan children's writing. A buyer who does not read Sinhala will still find the illustrations legible, but the story itself will not be.
