Set in 1860s Kentucky, this searing novel traces the lives of enslaved people at Sweet Home plantation as the abolitionist movement begins to tear their world apart. When Sethe's desperate act of violence against her own daughter transforms her journey from love to tragedy, the ghost of that child—Beloved—returns to haunt and seek vengeance. Toni Morrison weaves a haunting exploration of slavery's devastating impact on those who survived it and those who did not.
