Question 1

What is Ziziphus napeca used for in Sri Lankan medicine?

Accepted Answer

Ziziphus napeca is catalogued as an ayurvedic medicinal plant in Sri Lanka. Traditional practitioners have used various parts of the plant — including the bark, roots, leaves, and seeds — in preparations intended to address skin conditions, fevers, and digestive complaints. Its astringent and anti-inflammatory properties are most commonly cited. Anyone wishing to use it therapeutically should consult a qualified ayurvedic physician.

Question 2

Where does Ziziphus napeca grow in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The plant is found predominantly in the dry zone and intermediate zone of Sri Lanka, growing in scrubland and open forest margins. It tolerates dry conditions and poor soils well, making it a common component of natural vegetation in the North Central and Eastern provinces. It is a wild species and is not typically cultivated.

Question 3

What family does Ziziphus napeca belong to?

Accepted Answer

Ziziphus napeca belongs to the family Rhamnaceae. It is part of the genus Ziziphus, which includes other well-known species such as Ziziphus mauritiana (Indian jujube). The genus is characterised by spiny branches, small flowers, and drupe-type fruits.

Question 4

Is Ziziphus napeca the same as jujube?

Accepted Answer

No, Ziziphus napeca and the commonly cultivated jujube (Ziziphus mauritiana) are related but distinct species. The cultivated jujube produces larger, sweeter fruits and is grown commercially across South and Southeast Asia. Ziziphus napeca is a wild Sri Lankan species with smaller fruits, recorded primarily for its medicinal rather than culinary value.

Question 5

What is the Sinhala name for Ziziphus napeca?

Accepted Answer

The plant is sometimes referred to as Puvak-eta in Sinhala, though vernacular names can vary by region and community. Sri Lanka's ayurvedic documentation system cross-references such local names with scientific and Sanskrit nomenclature to avoid confusion between similar species.

Question 6

Is Ziziphus napeca endangered or protected in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Ziziphus napeca is not generally considered critically endangered, as it grows across relatively extensive dry-zone scrubland habitats. However, the degradation of dry-zone vegetation through agricultural expansion does pose a long-term risk to populations of wild medicinal plants, including this species. Protected areas such as Wilpattu National Park provide indirect refuge for dry-zone flora.

Question 7

How is Ziziphus napeca catalogued in Sri Lanka's botanical records?

Accepted Answer

The plant carries the reference code LK94005917 in Lakpura's catalogue of Sri Lankan ayurvedic medicinal flora. Sri Lanka's formal documentation of medicinal plants is managed under national health and biodiversity programmes that maintain records across scientific, Sinhala, Tamil, and classical Pali or Sanskrit naming systems.
