Accepted Answer

Woodfordia fruticosa, known as Dhataki in Sanskrit, is primarily used in Ayurveda as a fermenting agent in the preparation of classical herbal liquids called Asava and Arishta. Its flowers are also valued for their astringent properties and are included in formulations for digestive disorders, uterine conditions, skin complaints, and fever management.

Question 2

Question 3

Where does Woodfordia fruticosa grow in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The shrub grows naturally in Sri Lanka's dry and intermediate climatic zones, typically on rocky hillsides, scrub forest margins, and open woodland areas. It is most commonly encountered in north-central and transitional regions of the island, and flowers prolifically during the dry season.

Question 4

Which part of Woodfordia fruticosa is used medicinally?

Accepted Answer

The dried flowers are the part most widely used in Ayurvedic medicine. They serve both as a fermenting agent in compound preparations and as an active ingredient valued for astringent, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial properties. The bark also has some traditional applications as an astringent.

Question 5

Is Woodfordia fruticosa the same as Cordyline fruticosa?

Accepted Answer

No, these are entirely different plants. Woodfordia fruticosa belongs to the family Lythraceae and is a medicinal shrub known for its red tubular flowers and use in Ayurvedic formulations. Cordyline fruticosa, sometimes called the ti plant, is an ornamental foliage plant in the family Asparagaceae with no shared medicinal tradition.

Question 6

What classical Ayurvedic medicines contain Woodfordia fruticosa?

Accepted Answer

Several well-known classical Ayurvedic preparations include Woodfordia fruticosa flowers, among them Ashokarishta (for gynaecological health), Dashamularishta (a general tonic), Kutajarishta (for digestive disorders), and Draksharishtam (for respiratory and digestive support). These are still manufactured by licensed Ayurvedic pharmacies in Sri Lanka.

Question 7

Are there any scientific studies on Woodfordia fruticosa?

Accepted Answer

Yes, phytochemical and pharmacological research has identified tannins, flavonoids, saponins, and triterpenoids in the plant's flowers. Studies have explored potential antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and hepatoprotective activities, lending scientific context to its traditional uses. However, clinical evidence is still developing, and use should be guided by a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner.

Question 8

Can I find Woodfordia fruticosa during a trip to Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Yes, the shrub can be encountered during visits to dry-zone forests, botanical garden tours, and Ayurvedic herb farm visits across the island. Some eco-lodges and Ayurvedic wellness resorts maintain herb gardens that include Dhataki. The plant is most visually striking when in flower, typically between November and March.
