Vrischika and Meena Porondam

This page explains how Sri Lankan marriage matching, porondam in Sinhala and porutham in Tamil, reads a pairing of Vrischika (Scorpio) and Meena (Pisces). It covers the rashi-level results in both directions and shows why the two birth stars matter far more than the signs alone.

What do Vrischika and Meena mean in porondam?

In Sri Lankan matching, the rashi is the moon sign (chandra rashi), the sign the Moon occupied at birth in the sidereal zodiac. It is not the sun sign printed in newspaper horoscopes, so a person's rashi often differs from the Western sign they know.

Vrischika is ruled by Mars and Meena by Jupiter. Three rashi-level items are checked for this pair: the rashi count between the two signs, the relationship between their ruling planets (rashyadhipathi in Sinhala, rasi adhipathi in Tamil) and vashya. The results depend on which partner is the bride, because the count is taken from the bride's sign to the groom's.

How does it look with a Vrischika bride and a Meena groom?

Counting from Vrischika to Meena gives 5. On this count the rashi item is not obtained in both the Sinhala and Tamil systems.

The rashi lords, Mars and Jupiter, are mutual friends, so rashyadhipathi (rasi adhipathi) is obtained in both systems. This is a warm point in the pairing, as the two ruling planets are regarded as well disposed towards each other.

Vashya, which looks at a natural sense of attraction and mutual influence between the signs, is not obtained for this direction in either system. These are only three items among many, and none of them settles the match on its own.

What changes with a Meena bride and a Vrischika groom?

Reversing the roles changes the count. From Meena to Vrischika the count is 9, and here the rashi item is obtained in both the Sinhala and Tamil systems.

The ruling planets are the same pair, Jupiter and Mars, and they remain mutual friends, so rashyadhipathi (rasi adhipathi) is again obtained.

Vashya stays not obtained in this direction too, in both systems. So with a Meena bride and a Vrischika groom, two of the three rashi-level items are obtained, compared with one of three in the other direction. This is a useful example of why the bride and groom positions are always read separately in traditional matching.

Why do the birth stars decide the real match?

Each rashi spans parts of several nakshatras, so two people with these signs can hold any of 81 star-quarter combinations. Most porondam items, including rajju, are judged from the stars, and outcomes vary widely.

With a Vrischika bride and Meena groom, 0% of combinations reach 8 of 10 porutham, 51% are weak on the Tamil reckoning and 41% show a Tamil rajju clash. With a Meena bride and Vrischika groom, 25% reach 8 of 10, 46% are weak and 41% show a rajju clash.

In both directions, 100% of combinations pass the Sinhala porondam, leaving aside the weekday item. Entering full birth details in the calculator gives the actual result.
