Question 1

What is Trapa bispinosa used for in Ayurveda?

Accepted Answer

Trapa bispinosa is classified as a cooling and astringent plant in Sri Lankan Ayurvedic medicine. The kernel is used as a nutritive food during recovery from illness and in formulations addressing digestive and urinary complaints. The shell has traditional topical applications for skin conditions.

Question 2

Is Trapa bispinosa edible?

Accepted Answer

Yes, the kernel inside the hard-shelled fruit is edible and has been consumed in South Asian communities for centuries. It can be eaten raw, boiled, or dried and powdered. It is starchy, mildly sweet, and naturally gluten-free.

Question 3

Where does Trapa bispinosa grow in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

It grows in still or slow-moving freshwater habitats such as ancient irrigation tanks, ponds, and seasonal wetlands, primarily in the lowland dry and intermediate zones. The North Central and Eastern provinces, with their network of ancient reservoirs, are among the most likely locations.

Question 4

What is the difference between Trapa bispinosa and Trapa natans?

Accepted Answer

Both are related aquatic plants that produce spined, hard-shelled edible fruits, but they are distinct species. Trapa bispinosa has two spines on its fruit, while Trapa natans typically has four. They occur in overlapping but different geographic ranges across Asia and Europe.

Question 5

Does Trapa bispinosa have any scientifically proven health benefits?

Accepted Answer

Laboratory studies have identified antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial activity in various parts of the plant, linked to flavonoids, tannins, and phenolic acids. However, robust clinical trials in humans are limited, and it should not replace professionally prescribed medical treatment.

Question 6

Is the water chestnut from Trapa bispinosa the same as the Chinese water chestnut?

Accepted Answer

No. Trapa bispinosa is an aquatic plant producing a hard-shelled nut-like fruit, while the Chinese water chestnut (Eleocharis dulcis) is a sedge that produces a corm. They belong to entirely different plant families and are not botanically related, though both are eaten as foods.

Question 7

How is Trapa bispinosa catalogued in Sri Lanka's official Ayurvedic system?

Accepted Answer

It holds a recognised entry in Sri Lanka's official Ayurvedic medicinal plant catalogue maintained by the Department of Ayurveda. This formal status allows it to be used in licensed Ayurvedic products and formulations manufactured and sold within the country.
