Question 2

What is Tamilnadia uliginosa used for in Ayurvedic medicine?

Accepted Answer

In traditional Sri Lankan Ayurvedic practice, the plant's bark, roots, and fruit are used in formulations associated with fever, digestive disorders, inflammation, and wound healing. It is typically used as part of compound preparations rather than alone.

Question 3

It is a shrub or small tree producing small tubular flowers and fleshy fruits. Like many Rubiaceae members, it has opposite leaves and a relatively compact growth form suited to moist understorey and riparian environments.

Question 6

Has Tamilnadia uliginosa been studied scientifically?

Accepted Answer

Phytochemical investigations have identified compounds including alkaloids, flavonoids, and tannins in the plant, which are consistent with its traditional medicinal applications. Formal clinical trials remain limited, but interest from researchers in Sri Lanka and the wider region is ongoing.

Question 7

Is Tamilnadia uliginosa an endangered plant?

Accepted Answer

The species is not widely flagged as critically threatened, but its preferred wetland and riparian habitats face ongoing pressure from drainage and land conversion in Sri Lanka. Sustainable wild harvesting practices are encouraged to protect existing populations.
