Question 1

What is Sterculia foetida used for in ayurveda?

Accepted Answer

In Sri Lankan and broader South Asian ayurvedic tradition, Sterculia foetida is associated with therapeutic applications involving its seeds, bark, and leaves. The seed oil has been cited in folk remedies for skin and joint conditions, while the bark's astringent properties appear in anti-inflammatory preparations. Use should always be guided by a qualified ayurvedic practitioner.

Question 2

Why does Sterculia foetida smell bad?

Accepted Answer

The species name 'foetida' is Latin for 'foul-smelling', a direct reference to the odour of its flowers. The smell mimics rotting organic matter to attract flies and similar insects that act as pollinators, a strategy known as deceptive or carrion-mimicry pollination. This is an evolutionary adaptation rather than a sign of disease or decay.

Question 3

Where can I find Sterculia foetida in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The tree occurs naturally in Sri Lanka's dry and intermediate zones, often in lowland forests, along forest margins, and in village home gardens. The North Central Province, particularly around ancient tank villages, offers good opportunities to encounter well-established specimens. Local nature guides can help identify the tree reliably.

Question 4

Is the Sterculia foetida tree the same as Java olive?

Accepted Answer

Yes, Java olive is one of several common names used for Sterculia foetida. It is also known as the poon tree or wild almond in different parts of its range. The tree is native to tropical Asia and East Africa, and the name 'Java olive' reflects one of its areas of traditional prominence in Southeast Asia.

Question 5

Are Sterculia foetida seeds safe to eat?

Accepted Answer

Roasted seeds are consumed as a snack in parts of South and Southeast Asia and are generally considered safe after proper preparation. Raw or improperly processed seeds and their oil can cause adverse reactions. Traditional preparation involves dry-roasting, which is considered necessary before consumption.

Question 6

What is the Sinhala name for Sterculia foetida?

Accepted Answer

Sterculia foetida is commonly referred to as 'Hulan Hik' or 'Katu Kaduru' in Sinhala, though local names can vary by region. The botanical name is the most reliable identifier when discussing the species with researchers or medical professionals.

Question 7

How tall does Sterculia foetida grow?

Accepted Answer

Mature trees typically reach 20–30 metres in height, though exceptional specimens in undisturbed forest can grow taller. The tree has a straight trunk and wide-spreading canopy, making large individuals visually prominent in dry-zone landscapes. Growth rate is moderate under natural conditions.
