Question 1

What is Spilanthes iabadicensis used for?

Accepted Answer

Spilanthes iabadicensis is catalogued in Sri Lanka's traditional Ayurvedic pharmacopoeia and has been used historically in relation to oral health, inflammation, and skin complaints. Like many plants in the Spilanthes genus, it is associated with a numbing or tingling effect attributed to compounds called alkylamides. Clinical research specific to this species is limited, so traditional uses should not be treated as medically validated claims.

Question 2

Is Spilanthes iabadicensis the same as the toothache plant?

Accepted Answer

The toothache plant commonly referenced in herbal medicine is usually Acmella oleracea (formerly Spilanthes acmella), a closely related species. Spilanthes iabadicensis belongs to the same genus and shares some characteristics but is a distinct species recorded specifically in Sri Lanka's medicinal plant catalogue. Taxonomic revisions within the Spilanthes/Acmella group mean that older and newer sources may use different names for related plants.

Question 3

Where does Spilanthes iabadicensis grow in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The herb is associated with Sri Lanka's wet and intermediate zones, favouring moist, shaded habitats such as forest margins, stream banks, and garden edges at lower to mid elevations. It is not typically found in the dry northern or north-western regions of the island.

Question 4

What family does Spilanthes iabadicensis belong to?

Accepted Answer

It belongs to the family Asteraceae, one of the largest flowering plant families, which also includes sunflowers, daisies, and chamomile. Plants in this family are recognisable by their composite flower heads, and the Spilanthes genus in particular is known for its distinctive cone-shaped button flowers.

Question 5

How is Ayurvedic medicine practised in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Sri Lanka maintains a government-recognised system of indigenous medicine alongside modern healthcare, with dedicated universities, hospitals, and a national formulary of approved plants and preparations. Practitioners known as veda mahattayas often hold lineage-based knowledge, and the state regulates the sector through the Ministry of Indigenous Medicine. Visitors can encounter Ayurvedic practices at wellness retreats, rural cultural experiences, and traditional herb gardens across the island.

Question 6

Are there safety concerns with using Spilanthes plants?

Accepted Answer

Plants in the Spilanthes genus contain bioactive alkylamide compounds that can cause strong tingling sensations and may interact with certain health conditions or medications. As with any medicinal herb, use outside of traditional supervised practice carries risks. Anyone considering therapeutic use should consult a qualified Ayurvedic or medical practitioner rather than relying on informal sources.

Question 7

How does Sri Lanka's plant biodiversity compare globally?

Accepted Answer

Sri Lanka is recognised as one of the world's biodiversity hotspots, with a remarkably high proportion of endemic plant species relative to its land area. The island's wet zone forests in particular harbour dense concentrations of medicinal plants, many of which remain under-studied scientifically despite long records of traditional use. This biodiversity makes Sri Lanka an important focus for ethnobotanical research.
