Simha and Makara Porondam

Simha (Leo) and Makara (Capricorn) is a pairing families often ask about when comparing horoscopes for marriage. Here, rashi means the moon sign (chandra rashi) in the sidereal zodiac used in Sri Lanka, not the sun sign found in newspaper columns. This page explains the rashi-level porondam and porutham results in both directions, and why the two birth stars matter most.

What do the rashi count and rashi lords tell us about Simha and Makara?

Rashi matching begins by counting from the bride's moon sign to the groom's. Counting from Simha, Makara is the sixth sign. Counting from Makara, Simha is the eighth. Astrologers call this a six–eight pairing, a position the traditional rules treat with care. That is why the rashi item is mostly not obtained here.

The second check looks at the planets that rule each sign. Simha is ruled by the Sun and Makara by Saturn. In the classical scheme these two lords are mutual enemies. As a result, the rashi-lord item (rashyadhipathi in Sinhala, rasi adhipathi in Tamil) is not obtained in either direction.

How do the results change depending on who is the bride?

With a Simha bride and Makara groom, the Sinhala porondam shows rashi, rashyadhipathi and vashya as not obtained. The Tamil porutham agrees on rasi and rasi adhipathi, but its vasya item is obtained, because the two traditions use different vashya tables.

With a Makara bride and Simha groom, the Sinhala rashi item is partly obtained, while rashyadhipathi and vashya are not obtained. In the Tamil system, rasi, rasi adhipathi and vasya are all not obtained in this direction.

Vashya, or vasya, looks at the natural attraction or influence between the two signs. Because the results shift like this, it always helps to state clearly which partner is which and which tradition is being followed.

Why do the birth stars decide the real match?

Rashi items are only a small part of the picture. A full porondam or porutham is worked out from the two birth stars (nakshatra), and each star is divided into quarters. Every pair of rashis allows 81 star-quarter combinations, and their results vary widely.

For a Simha bride and Makara groom, about 75% of combinations pass the Sinhala porondam when the weekday is left aside, and around 21% give a weak Tamil result. For a Makara bride and Simha groom, all 81 pass the Sinhala check on the same basis, while about 70% are weak in the Tamil system. In both directions, about 4% show a Tamil rajju clash, and none reach 8 of 10 porutham.

How should families check a Simha and Makara match?

The outcome depends so much on the exact stars that the sign names alone cannot settle anything. The best first step is to use the porondam calculator with each person's full birth details: date, exact time and place of birth. These details give the correct moon sign, nakshatra and quarter. The calculator then shows each item as obtained, partly obtained or not obtained, in both the Sinhala and Tamil traditions.

For a marriage decision, it is wise to take these results to a family astrologer. An astrologer can read the complete horoscopes together and consider details the calculator does not cover. They can also explain the reading in the light of the family's own customs.
