Question 1

What is Sechium edule used for in Ayurveda?

Accepted Answer

In Sri Lanka's Ayurvedic tradition, Sechium edule (chayote) is used to support digestive health, kidney and urinary tract function, and as a cooling food during inflammatory conditions. The fruit, leaves, and root each have distinct recognised applications within traditional practice.

Question 2

Is chayote grown in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Chayote is cultivated in Sri Lanka's central highlands, particularly in the Nuwara Eliya and Kandy districts, where the cooler climate suits it. It is commonly found in home gardens and small-scale farms and is used both as food and in traditional medicine.

Question 3

What does chayote taste like and how is it cooked in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Chayote has a mild, slightly crisp flavour similar to a cross between cucumber and water chestnut. In Sri Lanka it is typically prepared as a curry, added to stir-fries, or served as a steamed vegetable side dish. It absorbs spices well and pairs naturally with Sri Lankan aromatics.

Question 4

Is Sechium edule the same as chow-chow or chayote?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Sechium edule is the scientific name for the plant known variously as chayote (Central America and Latin America), chow-chow (South Asia and the Caribbean), and christophine (parts of the Caribbean and West Africa). In Sri Lanka it is commonly referred to by its English name or described simply as a gourd variety.

Question 5

What are the health benefits of eating chayote?

Accepted Answer

Chayote is low in calories, high in water content, and provides folate, vitamin C, potassium, and dietary fibre. It is considered easy to digest and is often included in diets intended to support cardiovascular health and kidney function. Traditional Ayurvedic uses align broadly with these nutritional properties.

Question 6

Where can I learn about Ayurvedic plants during a visit to Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The Royal Botanic Gardens at Peradeniya near Kandy maintains extensive plant collections including many medicinal species. Ayurvedic wellness centres throughout the hill country and southern coast often have herb gardens with guided explanations. Village farm experiences near forested areas can also provide hands-on encounters with traditionally cultivated medicinal plants.

Question 7

How many plants are in Sri Lanka's official Ayurvedic medicinal plant catalogue?

Accepted Answer

The catalogue maintained by Sri Lanka's Department of Ayurveda documents hundreds of plant species recognised within the country's Ayurvedic and indigenous medicine traditions. The list includes both ancient indigenous species and plants introduced from other regions that have been absorbed into local practice over time.
