Question 1

What is Polyalthia longifolia used for in traditional medicine?

Accepted Answer

In Ayurvedic practice, various parts of Polyalthia longifolia — particularly the bark — are traditionally used to address fever, skin conditions, and general tonic purposes. The bark contains alkaloids and diterpenes that have shown antimicrobial and antipyretic properties in laboratory studies. Traditional use should always be guided by a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner.

Question 2

What is the common name for Polyalthia longifolia?

Accepted Answer

The tree is most widely known in English as the Mast Tree or False Ashoka. The name Mast Tree reflects its tall, straight trunk, which has historically been used for flagpoles and light construction. In Sinhala it is sometimes referred to as Wal Arishta.

Question 3

Is Polyalthia longifolia native to Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Polyalthia longifolia is native to South Asia broadly, including Sri Lanka, India, and parts of Southeast Asia. In Sri Lanka it occurs both as a naturalised tree in drier lowland zones and as a widely cultivated ornamental planted along roadsides and within temple compounds.

Question 4

How can I identify Polyalthia longifolia?

Accepted Answer

The tree is distinctive for its very narrow, columnar profile with long, pendulous branches and lance-shaped wavy-edged leaves. It grows tall — often well above neighbouring trees — with a straight single trunk. Small greenish-yellow star-shaped flowers appear seasonally, followed by clusters of small oval fruits.

Question 5

What does modern science say about Polyalthia longifolia's medicinal properties?

Accepted Answer

Phytochemical research has identified diterpenes, alkaloids, flavonoids, and tannins in the plant. Laboratory studies have shown promising antibacterial, antifungal, and antioxidant activity for certain extracts. However, large-scale clinical trials in humans remain limited, so the plant should not replace conventional medical treatment.

Question 6

Where can I see medicinal plants like Polyalthia longifolia in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Ayurvedic herb gardens, traditional pharmacies known locally as wedakama, and eco-lodge botanical tours are common places to encounter medicinal plants in their living context. Many Ayurvedic resorts in the hill country and coastal areas maintain curated plant collections. The tree itself is also visible along roadsides and at Buddhist temple grounds throughout the island.

Question 7

Is Polyalthia longifolia the same as the Ashoka tree?

Accepted Answer

No, though the two are sometimes confused. The true Ashoka tree is Saraca asoca, a different species from the family Fabaceae with distinctive orange-red flower clusters and deep cultural significance in both Buddhist and Hindu traditions. Polyalthia longifolia belongs to the Annonaceae family and is called False Ashoka partly because of a superficial resemblance in leaf shape.
