What is Pekoe grade tea?

What does Pekoe tea taste like?

Pekoe produces a light golden-reddish liquor with a rich, woody aroma and a delicate, mellow flavour. It is less astringent than broken-grade teas and carries soft malt notes with a clean finish. The exact taste varies by growing region and estate.

What is the difference between Pekoe and Orange Pekoe?

Orange Pekoe (OP) leaves are longer, more open, and wiry, while Pekoe leaves are shorter and tightly rolled into a peppercorn shape. Both are whole-leaf grades from the same plant, but OP typically yields a slightly more delicate, aromatic cup, whereas Pekoe can be marginally fuller-bodied due to its tighter twist.

How do I brew Pekoe tea?

Use freshly boiled water at around 90–95°C, about one heaped teaspoon of leaf per 200 ml of water, and steep for three to four minutes. Because Pekoe is a tightly rolled whole-leaf grade, it needs a little longer to unfurl fully than broken-grade teas. Serve black or with a small amount of milk.

Is Pekoe tea from Sri Lanka good quality?

Ceylon Pekoe is produced across Sri Lanka's high, mid, and low-grown regions, each offering distinct cup characters. High-grown Pekoe from regions such as Nuwara Eliya or Uva is particularly valued for its brightness and aromatic character. Why do Pekoe tea leaves look like black peppercorns?

As the tea leaves are heavily twisted and rolled during the traditional black tea manufacturing process, this is the grade that gets the appearance of black peppercorns. Once brewed, this tea has a rich aromatic forest-like (woodish) scent and the liquor generally has a light golden reddish color and a delicate taste.
