Question 1

What is Pedilanthus tithymaloides used for in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

In Sri Lanka's Ayurvedic tradition, Pedilanthus tithymaloides is used primarily for topical applications including wound care, skin conditions such as warts, and localised joint or muscle complaints. It is handled with care because its milky latex is an irritant. Traditional use always involves preparation by a qualified practitioner.

Question 2

Is Pedilanthus tithymaloides poisonous?

Accepted Answer

The plant's latex and other parts contain compounds that are toxic if ingested improperly. Skin contact with the sap can cause irritation, redness, and blistering. Eye contact is particularly hazardous. It should not be consumed or applied without guidance from a trained Ayurvedic practitioner.

Question 3

What are the common names for Pedilanthus tithymaloides?

Accepted Answer

The plant is widely known as Devil's Backbone, referring to its distinctive zigzagging stem, and also as Zigzag Plant, Redbird Cactus, and Redbird Flower. In Ayurvedic literature and Sri Lankan vernacular, it may be referred to by regional names that vary by district and language community.

Question 4

Where does Pedilanthus tithymaloides grow in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The plant grows across Sri Lanka's lowland and mid-elevation zones, thriving especially in dry and semi-arid areas. It is commonly found in village gardens, hedgerows, temple grounds, and Ayurvedic institution gardens throughout the dry zone and intermediate zone districts.

Question 5

Is Pedilanthus tithymaloides native to Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

No, the plant is native to tropical America. It was introduced to Asia and has since naturalised widely across South and Southeast Asia, including Sri Lanka. Despite its introduced status, it has been integrated into the local Ayurvedic pharmacopoeia over many generations.

Question 6

What family does Pedilanthus tithymaloides belong to?

Accepted Answer

It belongs to the family Euphorbiaceae, closely related to the genus Euphorbia. Like many members of this family, it produces a milky latex sap that contains bioactive — and potentially toxic — compounds.

Question 7

Can tourists learn about Ayurvedic medicinal plants while visiting Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Botanical gardens, Ayurvedic wellness centres, and village heritage tours across Sri Lanka offer opportunities to see and learn about medicinal plants in their growing context. Areas near the Sinharaja Forest Reserve and the hill country botanical gardens are particularly rewarding for plant-focused visitors.

Question 8

Has scientific research been done on Pedilanthus tithymaloides?

Accepted Answer

Phytochemical research has identified several bioactive compounds in the plant, including terpenoids, flavonoids, and alkaloids. While this research provides a scientific basis for further investigation of its traditional uses, clinical evidence remains limited and the plant should not be used as a substitute for professional medical advice.
