Question 1

What is Panicum maximum used for in Ayurveda?

Accepted Answer

In Sri Lanka's ayurvedic tradition, Panicum maximum has been associated with uses including support for urinary health, fever management, and as a mild diuretic. It is typically used within compound formulations rather than as a standalone remedy. Its inclusion in the official Sri Lankan medicinal plant catalogue confirms its recognised status in the island's traditional healing system.

Question 2

Is Panicum maximum native to Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Panicum maximum is not native to Sri Lanka. It originated in sub-Saharan Africa and was introduced to tropical Asia as a forage grass. It has since naturalised extensively across Sri Lanka's lowland and intermediate zones, where it grows in open areas, along roadsides, and on disturbed land.

Question 3

What is the common name for Panicum maximum?

Accepted Answer

Panicum maximum is commonly known as Guinea grass, a name derived from its African origins. It is also sometimes called buffalo grass in some regions, though this name is shared with other species. In botanical literature, it may also appear under the synonym Megathyrsus maximus.

Question 4

How is Guinea grass different from other fodder grasses in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Guinea grass is distinguished by its notably tall growth, broad leaf blades, and high dry matter yield, making it one of the most productive forage grasses in Sri Lanka's agricultural system. Unlike some other tropical grasses, it is generally palatable to cattle and can be cut multiple times per year. Its combination of agricultural value and traditional medicinal status sets it apart within Sri Lanka's botanical landscape.

Question 5

Where can Panicum maximum be found growing in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The grass is widespread across Sri Lanka's dry and intermediate climatic zones, particularly in the North Central, North Western, and Southern provinces. It grows along roadsides, on farmland margins, and in open disturbed areas. It is also actively cultivated by livestock farmers as a pasture crop in many parts of the country.

Question 6

Is Panicum maximum listed in Sri Lanka's official ayurvedic plant catalogue?

Accepted Answer

Yes, Panicum maximum is catalogued as an ayurvedic medicinal plant in Sri Lanka under the reference LK94005970. The country's Ministry of Indigenous Medicine maintains official records of plants recognised within the ayurvedic pharmacopoeia, and Panicum maximum is among the species documented in that system.

Question 7

What part of Panicum maximum is used medicinally?

Accepted Answer

Traditional ayurvedic use of Panicum maximum most commonly involves the roots and fresh plant material, though specific applications vary by regional tradition and the formulation being prepared.
