Question 1

What is Ochlandra stridula used for in Ayurveda?

Accepted Answer

Ochlandra stridula is included in Sri Lanka's catalogue of ayurvedic medicinal plants, where various parts of the plant have been used in traditional formulations. Its uses include preparations aimed at urinary disorders, inflammatory conditions, and as a source of tabasheer — a siliceous concretion from bamboo internodes valued in classical Ayurveda for respiratory and febrile conditions.

Question 2

Where does Ochlandra stridula grow in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The species favours damp, shaded habitats such as stream margins, wetlands, and lowland forested areas, primarily in Sri Lanka's wet and intermediate zones. Dense stands are typically found in the south-western lowlands and around river systems in the central low country.

Question 3

Is Ochlandra stridula a bamboo species?

Accepted Answer

Yes, Ochlandra stridula belongs to the bamboo subfamily Bambusoideae within the grass family Poaceae, making it a true reed bamboo. It is a clump-forming reed rather than a large timber bamboo, and it is considered one of the few reed bamboo species native to Sri Lanka.

Question 4

What is tabasheer and how is it related to Ochlandra?

Accepted Answer

Tabasheer is a naturally occurring, silica-rich concretion found inside the internodes of certain bamboo species, including Ochlandra. In Ayurvedic medicine, it is known as vansalochan and is used as a cooling agent in formulations for coughs, fevers, and respiratory ailments.

Question 5

Are there conservation concerns for Ochlandra stridula?

Accepted Answer

Formal global conservation assessments for the species are limited, but general threats to Sri Lanka's riparian reed habitats — including wetland drainage and agricultural encroachment — pose risks to populations. Ongoing botanical research and habitat protection efforts are relevant to the long-term survival of the species.

Question 6

How is Ochlandra stridula documented in Sri Lanka's traditional medicine system?

Accepted Answer

The species is listed in Sri Lanka's official catalogue of ayurvedic medicinal plants, maintained under the country's Ayurveda Act. This catalogue represents a systematic effort to record and preserve traditional botanical knowledge and forms the basis for research and regulation of ayurvedic practice on the island.

Question 7

Can visitors to Sri Lanka learn about medicinal plants like Ochlandra stridula?

Accepted Answer

Yes — Sri Lanka's ayurvedic gardens, spice farms, and botanical gardens, including the Royal Botanic Gardens at Peradeniya, offer guided visits where native and medicinal plant species can be seen in context. Wet-zone nature reserves in the south-west of the island provide additional opportunities to encounter the riparian habitats where reed bamboos naturally grow.
