Makara (Capricorn) and Kumbha (Aquarius) sit side by side in the zodiac, and both are ruled by Saturn. This page explains how Sri Lankan porondam (Sinhala) and porutham (Tamil) read this pair in both directions, and why the final picture always depends on the two birth stars.
Which rashi is being matched here?
In Sri Lankan marriage matching, the rashi is the moon sign (chandra rashi), the sign the Moon occupied at birth in the sidereal zodiac. It is not the sun sign printed in newspaper horoscopes, so someone who calls themselves a Capricorn may have a different chandra rashi altogether.
Rashi-level checks are only a small part of a full match. They look at three things: the count between the two signs, whether the two rashi lords are on good terms, and vashya. Because the count is taken from the bride's sign to the groom's, the result changes depending on who is in which sign, so both directions are explained below.
What happens when the bride is Makara and the groom is Kumbha?
Counting from Makara to Kumbha gives 2. On this count, the rashi item is not obtained in both the Sinhala porondam and the Tamil rasi porutham.
The rashi lords, however, are the same planet: both signs are ruled by Saturn. A shared lord means rashyadhipathi (Sinhala) and rasi adhipathi (Tamil) are obtained. Vashya is also obtained in both systems for this direction.
So at sign level, this direction shows two of the three items obtained and one not obtained. That is a starting point only; the birth stars carry far more weight in the overall reading.
What happens when the bride is Kumbha and the groom is Makara?
Counting from Kumbha to Makara gives 12. Here the systems differ slightly: the Sinhala rashi item is partly obtained, while the Tamil rasi porutham is obtained.
The rashi lords are again the same planet, Saturn, so rashyadhipathi and rasi adhipathi are obtained in both traditions. Vashya, on the other hand, is not obtained in either system for this direction.
This shows how reversing the signs can shift individual items. The shared Saturn rulership stays constant either way, but the count and vashya results swap around depending on which partner holds which sign.
Why do the birth stars matter more than the rashi?
The real match is decided by the two birth stars (nakshatra) and their quarters. Each rashi pair allows 81 star-quarter combinations, and outcomes vary widely between them.
With the bride in Makara and the groom in Kumbha, about 15% of combinations reach 8 of 10 Tamil porutham, about 40% come out weak in Tamil matching, about 5% show a Tamil rajju clash, and about 65% pass the Sinhala porondam (excluding the weekday item).
In the reverse direction, about 26% reach 8 of 10, about 5% are weak, about 5% show a rajju clash, and about 95% pass the Sinhala porondam. Use the calculator with full birth details, and consult a family astrologer for marriage decisions.
