Question 1

Is Madu Ganga a Ramsar wetland?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Madu Ganga was listed as a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance in 2003, recognising its ecological value as one of Sri Lanka's most significant mangrove systems. The designation requires the Sri Lankan government to maintain the wetland's ecological character and manage it sustainably.

Question 2

How long does a Madu Ganga boat safari take?

Accepted Answer

Most standard boat circuits last between one and two hours, covering the main mangrove channels, Kothduwa island temple, and a cinnamon demonstration stop. Longer private charters of two to three hours are available and allow you to reach quieter sections of the lagoon where wildlife sightings are more likely.

Question 3

Can I visit the temple on Kothduwa island?

Accepted Answer

Yes, Kothduwa Raja Maha Viharaya is open to visitors and boats can dock at the island. Visitors should dress modestly — covering shoulders and knees — and remove shoes before entering the temple compound. The site is an active place of worship, so quiet and respectful behaviour is expected.

Question 4

What is the best time of day to do the Madu River safari?

Accepted Answer

Early morning, between roughly 6:30 and 8:00 am, is generally the best time. Bird activity is highest, temperatures are cooler, and the light is softer for photography. Boat traffic from larger tour groups typically builds from mid-morning onward.

Question 5

Can I combine Madu Ganga with a turtle hatchery visit?

Accepted Answer

Yes. The turtle hatcheries at Kosgoda are located a short distance south along the coast from Balapitiya, and many tour operators combine both attractions in a single half-day excursion. The hatcheries operate year-round and protect nesting sites for several sea turtle species.

Question 6

How do I get to Madu Ganga from Galle?

Accepted Answer

Galle lies roughly 50 kilometres south of Balapitiya along the coastal A2 highway. By private car or taxi the drive takes around 45 to 60 minutes. The coastal train also connects Galle to Balapitiya with a journey of similar duration.

Question 7

Are crocodiles present in Madu Ganga?

Accepted Answer

Mugger crocodiles are present in the wetland, though sightings are not common on mainstream tourist routes. They are wild animals and boats do not approach them closely. The wildlife encountered on a standard safari circuit — monitors, monkeys, and kingfishers — is far more consistently visible than crocodiles.
