Question 1

What is Leonotis nepetiifolia used for in Ayurveda?

Accepted Answer

In Sri Lanka's Ayurvedic tradition, Leonotis nepetiifolia is used primarily for its reputed anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and antipyretic properties. Leaf decoctions and poultices are traditionally applied to skin conditions, minor wounds, insect bites, and respiratory complaints such as coughs. It is formally listed in Sri Lanka's Ayurvedic medicinal plant catalogue.

Question 2

What does Leonotis nepetiifolia look like?

Accepted Answer

Leonotis nepetiifolia is a tall annual herb, often reaching one to two metres in height, with upright stems and distinctive whorls of tubular orange flowers arranged at intervals along the stem. The leaves are broadly ovate with toothed margins. The plant's candlestick-like appearance makes it easy to identify in the field.

Question 3

Is Leonotis nepetiifolia native to Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

No, the plant is originally native to tropical Africa, but it has naturalised extensively across South and Southeast Asia, including Sri Lanka. It grows readily in disturbed ground, roadsides, and agricultural margins across a wide range of altitudes on the island.

Question 4

What are the active compounds in Leonotis nepetiifolia?

Accepted Answer

Laboratory studies have identified diterpenoids (including marrubiin), flavonoids, and other bioactive compounds in the plant. These are associated with the antioxidant, antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory activity reported in in-vitro research, and they help explain the plant's traditional medicinal reputation.

Question 5

Is Leonotis nepetiifolia the same as lion's ear or wild dagga?

Accepted Answer

Leonotis nepetiifolia shares the common name 'lion's ear' with the related species Leonotis leonurus, which is sometimes called 'wild dagga'. They are distinct species with different chemical profiles and legal statuses in various countries. Leonotis nepetiifolia is the species documented in Sri Lanka's Ayurvedic plant catalogue.

Question 6

Where in Sri Lanka can I see Leonotis nepetiifolia growing?

Accepted Answer

It can also be seen in Ayurvedic herbal gardens open to visitors, where it is cultivated alongside other medicinal plants and explained in the context of traditional medicine.

Question 7
