Question 1

When did King Vijayabahu I live?

Accepted Answer

Vijayabahu I reigned from approximately 1055 to 1110 CE, making his reign one of the longest in Sri Lankan recorded history. He lived during a period when the Chola Empire of South India controlled much of the island, and he spent decades working to end that occupation.

Question 2

Why is Vijayabahu I famous in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

He is celebrated for expelling the Chola occupiers who had ruled Sri Lanka for roughly 75 years, reunifying the island under Sinhalese rule, and restoring the Theravada Buddhist monastic order. He is regarded as a national hero alongside earlier kings such as Dutugamunu.

Question 3

What capital did Vijayabahu I use?

Accepted Answer

Vijayabahu established Polonnaruwa as his royal capital after his victory over the Cholas. The city had served as a Chola administrative centre and offered strategic advantages over the older capital of Anuradhapura. It remained the kingdom's capital for roughly two centuries after his reign.

Question 4

How did Vijayabahu I restore Buddhism in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

After reunification, he found that the Theravada monastic lineage in Sri Lanka had been so disrupted that valid higher ordination ceremonies could not be performed locally. He sent delegations to Burma to invite monks who could re-establish the proper ordination line, and he rebuilt temples and monasteries across the island.

Question 5

How long did it take Vijayabahu I to defeat the Cholas?

Accepted Answer

His military campaign lasted approximately 18 years before he achieved a decisive victory around 1070 CE. The effort required sustained alliances with regional chieftains and diplomatic ties with rulers in Burma, alongside persistent military pressure on Chola garrisons across the island.

Question 6

What is the Culavamsa and why does it matter for understanding Vijayabahu I?

Accepted Answer

The Culavamsa is a Pali-language Buddhist chronicle written by Sri Lankan monks that forms the primary literary source for Vijayabahu's life and reign. It records his campaigns, his religious restorations, and his administrative achievements, though it presents events from an explicitly Buddhist royal perspective. Archaeological evidence from Polonnaruwa helps confirm and supplement its accounts.

Question 7

Is there a connection between Vijayabahu I and Parakramabahu I?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Parakramabahu I, who ruled in the 12th century and is often regarded as Sri Lanka's greatest medieval king, was a nephew of Vijayabahu I. He built on the political stability, restored infrastructure, and revived Buddhist institutions that Vijayabahu had established, expanding the kingdom further and constructing the great Parakrama Samudra irrigation reservoir at Polonnaruwa.

Question 8

Can I visit sites associated with Vijayabahu I in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Polonnaruwa, the capital Vijayabahu established, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and open to visitors. The ancient city contains palaces, Buddhist temples, and monastic ruins dating from his reign and those of his successors. Guided tours of the site provide detailed historical context about this period of Sri Lankan history.
