This page explains how Kanya and Kumbha compare in Sri Lankan marriage matching: porondam in the Sinhala tradition and porutham in the Tamil tradition. It covers the rashi-level results in both directions and shows why the two birth stars matter far more than the signs alone.
Which Kanya and Kumbha are we talking about?
In Sri Lankan matching, the rashi is the moon sign (chandra rashi), worked out in the sidereal zodiac used locally. It is not the sun sign printed in newspaper horoscopes, so a person who calls themselves a Virgo or an Aquarius in Western terms may have a different chandra rashi.
Kanya (Virgo) is ruled by Mercury and Kumbha (Aquarius) by Saturn. Because these are different signs, the results depend on direction: a Kanya bride with a Kumbha groom is read differently from a Kumbha bride with a Kanya groom. Both pairings are explained below, using the statuses produced by the Lakpura calculator.
What does the rashi count show for this pair?
Rashi matching counts from the bride's sign to the groom's. With a Kanya bride and Kumbha groom, the count is 6. In both the Sinhala rashi porondam and the Tamil rasi porutham, this item is not obtained.
With a Kumbha bride and Kanya groom, the count is 8. Here the traditions differ: the Sinhala rashi porondam is partly obtained, while the Tamil rasi porutham is not obtained.
The 6 and 8 counts are mirror images of one another, which is why this pair is read carefully in both systems. Still, the rashi count is only one item among many, and it is weighed alongside the star-based items rather than on its own.
Are the rashi lords friends, and what about vashya?
The rashi lords are Mercury for Kanya and Saturn for Kumbha. Their relationship is friend and neutral: one planet counts the other as a friend, while the other regards it as neutral. That is enough for the lord item to be obtained in both directions, as rashyadhipathi porondam in the Sinhala system and rasi adhipathi porutham in the Tamil system.
Vashya, which looks at the natural mutual attraction between signs, is not obtained in either direction and in either tradition. So at the rashi level, this pair has a clear strength in the friendly lords, with the rashi count and vashya not supporting the match on their own.
Why do the birth stars matter more than the signs?
Each rashi contains parts of several nakshatras, and each nakshatra has four quarters. For Kanya and Kumbha there are 81 star-quarter combinations in each direction, and the results vary widely.
With a Kanya bride and Kumbha groom, about 75% of combinations pass the Sinhala porondam (excluding the weekday item), around 15% reach 8 of 10 Tamil porutham, about 51% fall in the weaker Tamil range, and about 5% show a Tamil rajju clash. With a Kumbha bride and Kanya groom, about 69% pass the Sinhala porondam, none reach 8 of 10, about 40% fall in the weaker range, and about 5% show a rajju clash.
