Question 1

What is Hedyotis fruticosa used for in Ayurveda?

Accepted Answer

In traditional Sri Lankan Ayurveda, Hedyotis fruticosa has been associated with anti-inflammatory, antipyretic, and liver-supportive uses. It typically appears in compound herbal preparations rather than as a standalone remedy. Any therapeutic use should be guided by a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner.

Question 2

Where does Hedyotis fruticosa grow in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The plant grows across the dry and intermediate zones of Sri Lanka, favouring open, well-drained ground such as roadsides, rocky slopes, and forest margins. It can also be found at the edges of mid-elevation habitats across the island.

Question 3

Is Hedyotis fruticosa the same as Oldenlandia fruticosa?

Accepted Answer

Yes, in older botanical classifications Hedyotis fruticosa was placed under the genus Oldenlandia, and the two names refer to the same plant. Taxonomic reclassification has moved many species formerly listed as Oldenlandia into the Hedyotis genus, though both names appear in older literature.

Question 4

Which part of Hedyotis fruticosa is used medicinally?

Accepted Answer

Traditional practice commonly references the whole plant — including roots, stems, and leaves — in herbal preparations. The plant is typically harvested from wild populations, dried, and incorporated into decoctions or powdered compound formulas.

Question 5

Is Hedyotis fruticosa native to Sri Lanka or introduced?

Accepted Answer

Hedyotis fruticosa is considered native to South Asia, occurring naturally across Sri Lanka and parts of the Indian subcontinent. It is not an introduced or invasive species and forms part of the island's indigenous flora.

Question 6

How is Hedyotis fruticosa identified in the field?

Accepted Answer

It is a small perennial shrub typically reaching 30–60 cm, with slender opposite leaves and small tubular white to pale-lilac flowers. It tends to grow in open, sunny positions rather than deep shade, and is often seen along disturbed ground, roadsides, and forest edges.

Question 7

Can I learn about Ayurvedic plants during a Sri Lanka tour?

Accepted Answer

Many wellness retreats and cultural tours in Sri Lanka include sessions on Ayurvedic herbal traditions, sometimes featuring guided walks through medicinal plant gardens or forest habitats. Kandy, Galle, and the hill country are among the best bases for this type of experience.
