Question 1

What is Daucus carota used for in ayurvedic medicine?

Accepted Answer

In ayurvedic and traditional Sri Lankan medicine, Daucus carota is used primarily for its diuretic, carminative, and anthelmintic properties. The seeds are most commonly referenced in traditional formulations for digestive health and urinary support. The cultivated root is also valued as a nutritive food in ayurvedic dietetics.

Question 2

Where does wild carrot grow in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Daucus carota is more commonly found in Sri Lanka's cooler highland areas, including the central and Uva provinces. It tends to grow along roadsides and in disturbed grasslands at mid to higher elevations, rather than in the lowland tropical zones.

Question 3

Is the carrot grown in Sri Lanka the same as wild Daucus carota?

Accepted Answer

No. The carrots grown commercially in Sri Lanka — mainly in the Nuwara Eliya district — are improved horticultural cultivars selected for large, sweet roots. They belong to the subspecies Daucus carota subsp. sativus. The wild form, used in traditional medicine, is more slender and not cultivated for food on a commercial scale.

Question 4

Is Daucus carota safe to use as a herbal remedy?

Accepted Answer

While Daucus carota has a long history of traditional use, certain preparations — particularly from the seeds — are contraindicated during pregnancy due to traditional emmenagogue associations. Anyone interested in ayurvedic treatment should consult a qualified, registered ayurvedic practitioner before using any plant-based preparation.

Question 5

What are the Sinhala names for Daucus carota?

Accepted Answer

The plant is most commonly referred to in Sinhala as 'Kaerat' (කැරට්), a term derived from the English 'carrot.' Traditional ayurvedic texts may reference it using Sanskrit-derived terminology consistent with classical Ayurveda literature.

Question 6

How is Daucus carota catalogued in Sri Lanka's ayurvedic system?

Accepted Answer

Daucus carota is included in the official catalog of ayurvedic medicinal plants of Sri Lanka, maintained under the framework of the island's Ministry of Indigenous Medicine. The catalog documents hundreds of plant species used in classical and traditional Sri Lankan healing practices.
