Question 1

What is Crinum defixum used for in traditional medicine?

Accepted Answer

Crinum defixum is used in Sri Lankan Ayurvedic practice as a component of compound formulations targeting inflammatory conditions, skin disorders, and certain nervous system complaints. The bulb is the most commonly cited part in traditional texts. It is typically prepared and administered by trained Ayurvedic practitioners rather than used as a standalone home remedy.

Question 2

Is Crinum defixum native to Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Crinum defixum is distributed across South and Southeast Asia, and it grows naturally in Sri Lanka's wet and intermediate zone habitats. It is not an endemic species unique to the island, but it has been integrated into Sri Lanka's Ayurvedic pharmacopoeia through centuries of documented traditional use.

Question 3

What family does Crinum defixum belong to?

Accepted Answer

Crinum defixum belongs to the family Amaryllidaceae, the same family that includes ornamental plants like amaryllis and daffodils. The genus Crinum comprises around 180 species, many of which have medicinal, ornamental, or cultural significance across tropical regions.

Question 4

What alkaloids are found in Crinum defixum?

Accepted Answer

The plant contains alkaloids including lycorine and related compounds, which have been studied in laboratory settings for antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and cytotoxic properties. These findings are preliminary and do not constitute clinical recommendations; medicinal use remains within the domain of qualified Ayurvedic physicians.

Question 5

Where can Crinum defixum be found growing in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The plant typically grows in moist, low-elevation environments such as riverbanks, wetland margins, and shaded forest edges. Sri Lanka's wet zone and the riparian corridors of the intermediate zone provide particularly suitable habitat, and the species can also be found in cultivated gardens associated with traditional medicine.

Question 6

How is Crinum defixum recorded in Sri Lanka's official Ayurvedic system?

Accepted Answer

It is formally listed in Sri Lanka's Ayurvedic pharmacopoeia, which is maintained under the government's Department of Ayurveda. This inclusion reflects historical and ethnobotanical evidence of its use in traditional formulations, placing it alongside hundreds of other documented medicinal plants.

Question 7

Is Crinum defixum endangered or protected in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Crinum defixum is not currently classified as a critically endangered species in Sri Lanka, but wetland habitats it depends on are under pressure from land-use change and drainage. Broader conservation of riparian and lowland forest ecosystems indirectly supports the persistence of species like this one.
