Question 1

What is Caesalpinia crista used for in traditional medicine?

Accepted Answer

Caesalpinia crista is used in ayurvedic and folk medicine across Sri Lanka and South Asia primarily for its antipyretic, anti-inflammatory, and digestive properties. The seed kernel is the most commonly used part, historically prescribed for intermittent fevers, digestive complaints, and joint inflammation. Topical preparations from ground seeds are also applied to skin conditions.

Question 2

What is the Sinhala name for Caesalpinia crista?

Accepted Answer

The plant is commonly called Kaluwel in Sinhala. It is also referred to as 'fever nut' in older English botanical literature, a name reflecting its historical use against malarial and other recurring fevers in tropical Asia.

Question 3

Where does Caesalpinia crista grow in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

It is most abundant in Sri Lanka's dry and intermediate zones, particularly across the North Western, North Central, and Northern provinces. It grows in coastal thickets, scrub forest edges, and disturbed secondary habitats, often climbing through hedgerows and roadside trees.

Question 4

Is Caesalpinia crista safe to use as a herbal remedy?

Accepted Answer

While it has a long history of traditional use, Caesalpinia crista contains bioactive compounds that require careful dosing. Self-medication is not recommended. Any use of preparations derived from this plant should be supervised by a qualified ayurvedic practitioner registered with Sri Lanka's Department of Ayurveda.

Question 5

What does Caesalpinia crista look like?

Accepted Answer

It is a thorny, scrambling liana with bipinnate leaves, small yellow flowers streaked with red on the upper petal, and flat leathery pods containing one or two smooth, hard, greyish-brown seeds. The recurved hook-like thorns along the stems are among its most distinctive features.

Question 6

Is Caesalpinia crista the same as the fever nut plant?

Accepted Answer

Yes. 'Fever nut' is a common English name for Caesalpinia crista, derived from the historical use of its seed kernel in treating malarial and intermittent fevers across South and South-East Asia. The plant is also sometimes called bonduc nut or nikkar nut in older botanical references.

Question 7

Has modern science confirmed the medicinal properties of Caesalpinia crista?

Accepted Answer

Phytochemical studies have identified cassane diterpenes, alkaloids, and flavonoids in the plant, and laboratory research has documented anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and anti-plasmodial activity in extracts. These findings support several traditional uses, though clinical trials in humans remain limited and no standardised pharmaceutical product is yet widely approved.
