Accepted Answer

In Sri Lankan Ayurveda, Aphanamixis polystachya is used primarily for its bark, which features in preparations targeting fever, inflammation, and skin disorders. The seed oil and leaves also have documented traditional applications. Use is typically within compound formulations rather than as a single-ingredient remedy, and should be directed by a qualified practitioner.

Question 2

What is the Sinhala name for Aphanamixis polystachya?

Accepted Answer

The tree is commonly known in Sinhala as Rohan. It belongs to the Meliaceae family and is closely related to other medicinal trees found across tropical Asia. The species name polystachya refers to the plant's characteristic multi-spiked flower racemes.

Question 3

Where does Aphanamixis polystachya grow in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The tree is found in the wet and intermediate zones of Sri Lanka, typically in lowland and mid-elevation tropical forests. It grows naturally in primary and secondary rainforest, including areas within the Sinharaja Forest Reserve and surrounding wet-zone habitats. It favours humid conditions with high rainfall.

Question 4

Is Aphanamixis polystachya an endangered species?

Accepted Answer

Populations of the tree have faced pressure from forest clearance and selective logging in parts of its range, though it is not classified as globally threatened. In Sri Lanka, conservation of wet-zone forests is the most important factor in maintaining viable wild populations of this and related medicinal species. Sustainable harvesting practices are recommended by official guidelines.

Question 5

Accepted Answer

It belongs to the family Meliaceae, commonly known as the mahogany family. This large family includes many economically important tropical trees valued for timber as well as medicinal properties. Question 6

Can tourists visit herb gardens or Ayurvedic centres in Sri Lanka to see medicinal plants?

Accepted Answer

Yes, Sri Lanka has several government-maintained botanical gardens as well as private Ayurvedic wellness centres that display and explain the island's medicinal flora. Guided walks in protected forest areas can also include interpretation of traditionally used plants. Cultural and wellness itineraries arranged through specialist operators often incorporate visits to traditional herb gardens.

Question 7

Has Aphanamixis polystachya been studied scientifically?

Accepted Answer

Yes, researchers across South Asia have studied extracts from the bark and seeds of Aphanamixis polystachya, focusing on their limonoid content and potential antimicrobial and cytotoxic activity. Published findings are primarily from laboratory-based studies. Comprehensive clinical trials in humans remain limited, so the plant's medical applications should be assessed within a qualified Ayurvedic framework.
