Question 1

What is Allmania nodiflora used for in Ayurveda?

Accepted Answer

In Sri Lanka's ayurvedic tradition, Allmania nodiflora has been used in traditional formulations for skin complaints, fever management, and mild digestive issues. Its aerial parts and roots are referenced in ethnobotanical literature as having cooling and anti-inflammatory properties. These uses are part of folk and classical ayurvedic practice, and anyone seeking treatment should consult a qualified ayurvedic practitioner.

Question 2

Is Allmania nodiflora native to Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Allmania nodiflora is not endemic to Sri Lanka — it is found across tropical Asia, including India and parts of Southeast Asia. However, it is well established in Sri Lanka's flora and is formally catalogued within the country's ayurvedic medicinal plant inventory. It grows naturally in moist, disturbed habitats at low to mid elevations.

Question 3

Which plant family does Allmania nodiflora belong to?

Accepted Answer

Allmania nodiflora belongs to the family Amaranthaceae, within the order Caryophyllales. It is a monotypic genus, meaning Allmania nodiflora is the only species in the genus Allmania. The species was described by Robert Brown and published by Robert Wight.

Question 4

Where can I see Allmania nodiflora in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The plant is most often found along paddy field margins, irrigation canal banks, and moist roadsides in the wet and intermediate zones of Sri Lanka. Botanical gardens, ayurvedic resort herb gardens, and guided nature walks in lowland reserves occasionally feature this and related medicinal plants as part of educational interpretation.

Question 5

What does Allmania nodiflora look like?

Accepted Answer

It is a small annual herb, typically 20–50 cm tall, with slender reddish stems and distinctly swollen nodes. Leaves are elliptic and alternate, and the flowers are small, pink to reddish, clustered at the leaf nodes. The fruit is a small, enclosed utricle — a characteristic shared with other members of the Amaranthaceae family.

Question 6

Is Allmania nodiflora the same as any other commonly known plant?

Accepted Answer

Allmania nodiflora is a distinct species and should not be confused with other members of the Amaranthaceae family such as Amaranthus species. It is the sole member of its genus. Older botanical texts may list it under synonymous names due to historical reclassifications, so cross-referencing with an up-to-date flora is advisable.

Question 7

How is Sri Lanka's ayurvedic plant catalogue compiled?

Accepted Answer

Sri Lanka's Department of Ayurveda maintains an official pharmacopoeia and medicinal plant registry, drawing on both classical Sanskrit and Sinhala texts as well as fieldwork by ethnobotanists. Plants like Allmania nodiflora are assessed for their traditional use records, distribution, and — where available — phytochemical research. The National Ayurveda Formulary serves as a key reference document.
