Question 2

Where does Actinopteris dichotoma grow in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

This fern is most commonly found in Sri Lanka's dry and intermediate zones, growing on rocky outcrops, laterite surfaces, stone walls, and occasionally on ancient stone structures. It is well-adapted to exposed, sunny conditions and periodic drought.

Question 3

Is Actinopteris dichotoma a rare plant in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

It is not currently classified as critically endangered in Sri Lanka, though its preferred rocky dry-zone habitats face some pressure from land-use changes. Continued documentation and habitat protection are considered important for its long-term security.

Question 4

What family does Actinopteris dichotoma belong to?

Accepted Answer

Actinopteris dichotoma belongs to the fern family Pteridaceae. It is notable within this family for its xeric adaptations, including the ability to tolerate prolonged drought and intense direct sunlight — unusual traits for a fern.

Question 5

Accepted Answer

The plant is commonly called the Ray Fern or Peacock Fern, names that refer to the radial, fan-like arrangement of its fronds. These common names are used across its range in South Asia and tropical Africa.

Question 6

How is Actinopteris dichotoma listed in Sri Lanka's Ayurvedic records?

Accepted Answer

Sri Lanka's Department of Ayurveda maintains an official catalogue of medicinal plants. Actinopteris dichotoma is recorded under the reference number LK94006979 within that system, helping standardise its identification for practitioners and researchers.

Question 7

Does Actinopteris dichotoma grow in wet forests or dry areas?

Accepted Answer

Unlike most ferns that prefer humid, shaded environments, Actinopteris dichotoma is a xerophytic species that thrives in dry, sun-exposed rocky habitats. It is not typically found in wet zone forests or dense rainforest understoreys.
