Sri Lanka Ayurvedic Drugs Corporation

The Sri Lanka Ayurvedic Drugs Corporation (SLADC) is Sri Lanka’s state-owned maker of Ayurvedic medicines. It was incorporated on 11 May 1969, by Gazette Extraordinary No. 14853/3 under the State Industrial Corporations Act No. 49 of 1957, to make and market Ayurvedic drugs for government hospitals, Ayurvedic physicians and the private sector, and it has done so for more than 55 years. Its head office and factory are at Navinna in Maharagama, with a newer factory at Pathiragoda, and it sells through its own retail centres and authorised dealers. The corporation says it puts the quality of its medicines and service to the public ahead of running as a business.

From herbal garden to factory. SLADC grows part of its raw material itself. Its largest herbal garden covers 50 acres at Nikaweratiya in Kurunegala District, and there are others at Medawachchiya and Dangolla in Anuradhapura District, planted with neem (kohomba), sandalwood and red sandalwood, nelli, bulu, aralu, beli, adathoda and many more. What it cannot grow it buys locally, importing only what Sri Lanka cannot supply. Its quality-control programme has written standards for more than 40 of its drugs and a hundred raw materials, checked by tests that run from taste, smell and microscopy to chromatography and limits for heavy metals, pesticide residues and microbes.

Herbal drinks and teas. Paspanguwa, the dried ginger, coriander and herb mix boiled down from four cups of water to one; Sanstha Peyawa sachets; Sanstha Rasam; the Nelli Rasakinda herbal drink; Immune Booster Powder; and tea bags of Iramusu, Ceylon cinnamon and Kothalahimbutu with black tea.

Capsules, tablets and syrups. Sudarshana capsules (also in a 60-capsule pack), Ashwagandha, cinnamon, Kothala Himbutu and Laxa+ capsules; the Meda Harani range as capsules, tablets and a Karavyadi quatha decoction; Sanstha Triphala tablets; and Madhuka herbal syrup.

Oils and balms. The classic Narayana thailaya and Divyanganadi oil, Nilma herbal hair oil, ghee oil, sesame oil and Jeewalepa herbal balm.
